NEW ORLEANS......THE CULTURAL MECCA!

The Merriam-Webster dictionary says "culture is the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group;  also the characteristic features of everyday existence".

The "characteristic features of everyday existence" for the city of  New Orleans is historically, presently, and probably will always be totally different than the rest of the United States.

NOLA represents the country's first melting pot.  Before the French arrived and mingled with Native Americans, Canadians were traveling in to trade with those same Native Americans.   It is a place where free people of color migrated.  Along with having the most free people of color as residents,  NOLA also gave us black creoles as a result of the mixing of French and Africans.

NOLA introduced Congo Square, a section of the city where slaves were given a day off and were allowed to sell their goods and services as a way to buy their freedom, as well as  play their music, which lead to the birth of Jazz.

NOLA represents the only bi-lingual city in the United States during the 1800's.  It is a city that during that time period housed French, Spanish, Italian, Haitian, African, German, and Native American citizens.

NOLA is a city that never sleeps, but is never in a hurry........(The Big Easy).  It creates wonderful music as well as the world's best food!

NOLA gives us Mardi Gras like no other can, second lines that celebrate weddings, funerals, and .......just because the sun is shining.   Where else can you experience the awesomeness of  the Mardi Gras Indians?

New Orleans.................the cultural mecca!!!
